Why are we having the “Bargoed Town Centre Tomorrow” conversation with our community?
Caerphilly County Borough Council has commissioned The Urbanists for the development of a Placemaking Plan for Bargoed town centre. The “Bargoed Town Centre Tomorrow” conversation will help ensure that the wants and needs of the community are reflected in this Placemaking Plan.
What is a Placemaking Plan?
A Placemaking Plan is a long-term plan for a place; they identify what is unique about the place and recommend projects and investment that could strengthen the place. Placemaking Plans provide the basic plan for the improvement of a place and ensure that all aspects that make a place great for living, working and visiting are taken into account. Successful Placemaking Plans are shaped by the knowledge of local experts (businesses and residents).
What’s the community’s role in shaping the Placemaking Plan and Bargoed future?
To ensure that the needs and aspirations of the local community are reflected within the Placemaking Plan, an engagement strategy has been developed. The strategy identifies the local residents, business owners and local groups as key stakeholders to engage with. Therefore, these conversation guide has been developed to provide supporting material to entertain these engagements.
What do we want to get from the conversations?
Quite simply, we need to understand the things that are most important to the local community and groups and their ambitions for Bargoed town centre.
What do you need from me?
To help us have those conversations! As councillors, partners, community groups and voluntary organisations, you will have groups that you are involved with or have regular contact with. We would like your support to help us get out and chat with as many people as possible. Some guidelines and prompts to start the conversation are reported below:
What do you think is unique about Bargoed?
What makes Bargoed special?
How could we improve the town centre?
Do you cycle? If not, why not?
Do you visit the town centre? If yes, how often and for what purpose? If not, why not?
Is Bargoed well connected? If not, how could this be improved?
What kind of amenities and provisions would you like to see Bargoed?
Would you like to see more trees and greenery within the town centre?
What would you like to do in the town that is currently not possible?
How do you think the town can be improved to support residents’ health and well-being?
What additional community uses or needs could be addressed?
There are six main categories that all Placemaking Plans should take into consideration to ensure a quality outcome. The six categories are:
1. People and community
2. Location
3. Movement
4. Mix of uses
5. Public realm
6. Identity
