Caerphilly Interchange Step 3 Public Consultation
Consultation has concluded
This exhibition is the third step of our community engagement, which began online in June 2022 through the Commonplace website.
You can still view the content and results of our mapping, questionnaire and initial ideas.
The purpose of this exhibition is to share our final proposals for the Interchange and explain how your feedback has helped to shape them.
Our brief was to transform the current station’s poor customer experience by creating a new interchange building and public realm that high-quality, safe, integrated, sustainable and accessible, and places the customer first.
The new facilities have been designed to meet the growth and needs of Caerphilly, and become a distinct part of the fabric of the town for current and future generations.
The display includes 9 different boards and a scale model. The boards are numbered in sequence. All boards are bilingual with the exception of 3 and 4 which are provided separately in Welsh and English.
We welcome your feedback using either the physical questionnaire (available at the library) or using the online Caerphilly Conversation Platform.
A planning application for the designs shown here will be submitted at the end of June where you will be able to comment on them in the usual way through the Caerphilly County Borough Council planning portal.

Board 2 - Step 1: The Existing Station
In Step 1 of our Community Engagement (online heatmap and questionnaire), we received 198 comments on the station map, and 408 individual responses to our questionnaire.
From these responses, and through our initial design studies, we identified 4 key problem areas at the current station which any new design would need to address.
Board 3 - Step 2: You Said
In Step 2 of our Community Engagement (sharing our ideas share and online questionnaire), we received 220 comments on our proposals across seven themes and areas of the interchange site.
A summary of this feedback is presented here, and we have used this to guide the further development of our designs.
Board 4 - Step 2: We Did
From Step 2 of our Community Engagement, we identified 5 common themes which we have sought to address as we have developed our designs.
Here we explain how we have adapted our proposals from feedback received, and also where we have continued with our original proposals, setting out the reasons why.
Board 5 - Improved Station Layout
This illustration show our proposals for the new Caerphilly Interchange design, with a focus on the station buildings and facilities.
The area between Cardiff Road and Station Terrace provides the ‘back-bone’ of the station, housing the shops, ticket office and toilet facilities.
At the upper level the active travel hub and a flexible community / retail building open onto new public realm with views of Caerphilly Castle.
Waiting spaces are provided within light weight buildings along the bus concourse, Platform 2 and Platform 3. The whole interchange is united by a new steel canopy structure sitting over the internal spaces.
Board 6 - Proposed Site Plan
This drawing shows the proposed site plan of the new Caerphilly Interchange to accompany Board 5. Here we have indicated how the building sits within the existing streetscape, and the key entrances and routes to and from the different transport modes.
Board 7 - Sustainability & The Environment
Environmental and community sustainability have been at the forefront of our design process since we began working on the project. We have aimed to harness environmental technology to improve the resilience of the station to adapt to the climate emergency.
